2022/24 Russian-Ukrainian War

Presumably the damage can be repaired and Russia certainly has more planes. Obviously, not good news for Russians but .....

LOL. No.

What do you think happens to something fragile like an airplane exposed to blast overpressure? There were cars impaled with I-beams 600m from the blast site. Even aside from what was not burned, a lot of what is left, is unlikely to be repairable, at least for the duration of this war.

And for whatever was left? Russia is already running out of spare parts. And this attack also destroyed stocks of spares, precision weapons, pilots and technicians. This isn't the end of the Russian Air Force. But Naval Aviation is a small and specific subset. And this was the only Naval Aviation base in Crimea, now 80% toasted.

It'll be open for a while. They need to provide a route for the Russians to flee. And they can't hit it while there's still lots of traffic on it. Several hundred civilian casualties will not be a good look for Ukraine.

In the meantime, they hit one of two bridges from Crimea into the mainland today. They are quietly narrowing options for the Russians one hit at a time.

From Ukraine Weapons Tracker on Twitter: (using the OSINT published Sat. Photos)

"We count approx. 5x Su-30SM multirole fighters & 6x Su-24M/MR strike/reconnaissance aircraft that were destroyed. 4 more is possible."

"The Russian Navy’s 43rd Independent Naval Attack Aviation Regiment only operates 12 Su-30SMs, 6 Su-24Ms, and 6 Su-24MRs- this is a *very* significant event."

Naww. Caused by careless smoking. It happens a lot according to the Russian info machine. They really do need designated smoking areas.
"The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine cannot establish the cause of the fire but once again recalls the rules of fire safety and the prohibition of smoking in unspecified places."

LOL

LOL! Ukraine's social media game has been on point since this war started.

Basically the end of Russian Naval Aviation in the Black Sea. It's the equivalent of Canada losing Shearwater.
