I'm sure the Toronto Liberal MPs want to provide the bailout. But I think optically the Liberals don't want to be seen nationally as "catering" to Toronto and giving them favors. Even though we all know they should be based on the disproportionate amount of taxes Toronto generates for the country.
The Gardiner teardown option was never going to happen. And Toronto being forced to pay for the re-build (and maintenance) was a very real possibility.
The best part of this deal is that it shows The Province has recognized Toronto has financial issues that it cannot fix on it's own, and it...
Yep, at this point if I was Chow I would be bringing motions to introduce a congestion charge and to cancel the Gardener east re-build. Lay it all on the PCs to either allow both items, or provide funding in their place to avoid them.
The only way Toronto is solving it's budget issue without help from the Province or the Feds would be a regional sales or income tax, or some type of heavy road tolls. There is no way to cover the shortfall with property taxes alone.
Freeland is a clown, she is arguing against the best interests of her own constituents. I have no idea why the Feds and Province continue to bicker while simultaneously dick-slapping the biggest City in the country. Tax revenue from Toronto basically funds a huge portion of everything they do...
Two things I would love to see Chow do, though both are very big asks.
1. Cancel the Gardiner east project. This will apply maximum pressure on DoFo and hopefully force the province to take on maintenance of the two main highways. At a bare minimum it could lead to a re-negotiation where the...
Keeping prices in-line with inflation is ok if we actually match inflation. But the average inflation rate in Canada in 2022 was around 6%, but the rent control approved inflation rate was only 2.5%.
And developers would still be very weary of unforeseen costs that aren't quickly captured by...
My initial post was raising concerns over Chow's platform which states she wants to remove vacancy de-control, meaning once rent is set when a unit is built, the rent can never be raised beyond the allowable inflation rate (unless an AGI is used). This is what I was flagging as a concern, I...
